The University has temporarily suspended some of its requirements for admitted students to ensure that they are able to enroll as planned. It also expects to work with students to adjust financial aid packages if family financial circumstances have changed.

In addition, UC has temporarily relaxed some undergraduate admissions policies to ensure high school and transfer students are not penalized by their inability to earn letter grades for academic classes or take standardized tests during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fall 2020 admitted students


The deadline to accept an offer of admission, known as the Statement of Intent to Register, remains May 1 for freshman and June 1 for transfers. Students who need additional time, or who need a deferment of a deposit, should contact their campus admissions office directly. Requests will be considered individually by each campus providing maximum flexibility to students needing extensions, and individual campuses have the authority to extend the deadline for accepting admission offers beyond May 1 or June 1. If a campus has extended its admissions deadline, they will notify admitted students directly.

To inquire about receiving an extension, contact your admissions office or use the messaging tool provided within the admitted students' portal.

Students will not have their admission offer rescinded over a missed transcript deadline, however, UC continues to request that transcripts be submitted by July 1 if at all possible. If your school or college is unable or unsure about its ability to issue transcripts by this date, we request that the school email with the school or college name, College Board code, and the date transcripts are expected to be available. Students will retain their admission status through the first day of class until official documents are received by campuses.

Yes. If an applicant for freshman or transfer admission completed secondary school/high school in a country where English was not the language of instruction, s/he must demonstrate English proficiency.

Each campus has its own procedure for considering and approving deferral requests. Please contact the campus admissions office for further information and instructions. Campuses will consider each request on a case-by-case basis, exercising as much flexibility as possible.

Current changes to UC admission criteria do not alter fall 2020 freshman admission decisions. Most campuses completed their admission reviews in February or early March, considering information presented in the application as of November 2019.

Planning for fall 2020 

As we work to protect the health and safety of the University of California community during this unprecedented time, we are carefully planning for a wide range of possibilities.

Currently, all campuses have determined initial summer sessions will be conducted via remote instruction. At this juncture, however, it is too soon to predict and evaluate the impacts of COVID-19, if any, on UC instruction beyond summer.

We will continue to carefully monitor the rapidly evolving situation and will keep the UC community informed as decisions are made.

Our campuses will reopen for on-site instruction when it is safe to do so – in coordination with federal, state and local health departments and authorities.

Some or all instruction for all or part of Academic Year 20-21 may be delivered remotely. Tuition and mandatory fees have been set regardless of the method of instruction and will not be refunded in the event instruction occurs remotely for any part of the Academic Year.

It is not possible to know at this time whether the COVID-19 pandemic will result in changes to operations in student housing and residential life in Academic Year 2020-2021. Consequently, we are not offering a housing guarantee.

The University understands that families’ financial circumstances may have changed or may change in the coming months. If that’s your situation, please visit the campus financial aid office website. Many have financial aid calculators that can help you determine whether recent changes to your income could increase your financial aid package. Campus financial aid websites also have contact information, including the best way to reach the financial aid office during remote operations for further assistance.

UC campuses will work with families over the summer to review their eligibility for financial aid.

Fall 2020 admitted freshmen

UC has temporarily suspended the letter grade requirement for A-G courses completed in spring 2020 for all students, including UC’s most recently admitted freshmen. A-G courses completed in spring 2020 with Pass (P) or Credit (CR) grades will satisfy appropriate A-G requirements.

UC recognizes the effort that students have already made in these challenging courses and will continue to award UC credit consistent with previous years for 2020 AP exams completed with scores of 3, 4, or 5.

UC will continue to award credit for designated IB subjects passed with scores of 5, 6 or 7, as well as extra units for the IB Diploma completed with 30 points or more.

UC will continue to award credit for designated GCE A-level subjects passed with grades of A, B or C.

Note: UC does not award credit for the Pearson International A-levels (IALs).

UC understands that secondary school diplomas or certificates may not be available in every country. Campuses are expected to be flexible in the absence of a diploma; however, all campuses will require official academic records/transcripts for all coursework completed in grades 9 through 12 to verify the information reported in the application.

Fall 2020/Winter 2021 admitted transfer students

Many community colleges are providing a Pass/No Pass or Credit/No Credit grading scheme for the winter, spring and summer terms in 2020 — sometimes with no other grading alternatives for students.

In light of this, UC has temporarily suspended its cap on Pass/No Pass (Credit/No Credit) units required to enroll at a UC campus as a junior. Any courses taken with Pass/No Pass or Credit/No Credit grading in the winter, spring and summer terms of 2020 will not count toward UC’s limit of 14 semester/21 quarter transferable units.

Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Merced, Riverside, San Diego, and Santa Barbara have agreed to accept Pass or Credit grades in major preparatory coursework completed in spring 2020 for all majors. Santa Cruz has agreed to accept Pass or Credit grades in major preparatory coursework completed in spring 2020 for all majors except Psychology and Cognitive Science.

Pass or Credit grades in major preparation are acceptable as noted above for admission purposes only; articulation of courses with Pass or Credit grades will be determined by the individual department after you enroll at UC.

Yes, so long as you meet minimum admissions requirements by the time you enter UC in the fall; this includes completion of 60 semester/90 quarter transferable units and the 7-course pattern, as well as attainment of a minimum 2.4 GPA (2.8 for nonresidents).

Completing minimum requirements by spring is a selection criterion used by many of our campuses. Students who will need summer coursework to meet minimum requirements due to spring course cancellations should work directly with their UC campus admissions office to determine any potential impact on an admission decision.

Some campuses require B grades in UC-E courses to demonstrate English proficiency and may not accept Pass or Credit grades for those requirements. Please check with those campuses directly for further guidance.

For all other campuses, all courses for the 7-course pattern and for IGETC must be completed with at least a C (2.0) grade or the equivalent. If the Pass or Credit grade at your college is equivalent to at least a C (2.0) grade, then it is acceptable to meet UC-E, UC-M, and IGETC requirements.

Note: UC Berkeley’s College of Letters & Science has agreed to allow Pass or Credit grades in General Education/Breadth courses completed in winter/spring 2020, for those students not completing IGETC.

Prospective high school and transfer students

For fall 2021 applicants, UC will not consider SAT or ACT test scores when making admissions decisions or awarding Regents and Chancellor’s scholarships. If you choose to submit test scores as part of your application, they may be used to determine your eligibility for the California statewide admissions guarantee, as an alternative method of fulfilling minimum requirements for eligibility or for course placement after you enroll.

The temporary suspension of the letter grade requirement for A-G courses applies to all A-G coursework completed in spring and summer 2020, including coursework completed by students currently in 9th, 10th, and 11th grades.

The Pass or Credit grade in spring and summer 2020 will continue to meet A-G requirements for any student currently enrolled in high school during the 2019-20 academic year.

UC cannot instruct individual schools or districts on how to choose to implement their grading policy. If your high school allows different grading options for different courses, you can choose the grading option that you feel is most beneficial for each course. Keep in mind that Pass grades will not be included in the GPA calculation, nor will they receive an extra point in the GPA if they are approved honors, AP or IB courses. However, UC-approved honors courses, including AP and IB, will be included in the honors course tallies, ensuring students are considered in comprehensive review as taking a challenging curriculum.

This does not lower the bar for admission, but accommodates the real barriers students have faced as tests have been cancelled and classes have moved to Pass/No Pass grading. Admissions to UC campuses is highly sought after and will continue to be just as competitive.

UC is not suspending minimum grade requirements, but rather allowing students whose schools have moved to Pass/No Pass grading systems this term to continue to earn the credit they need to be eligible for UC. Students will still need to achieve the minimum GPA of 3.0 (3.4 for nonresidents) with classes for which they are able to earn letter grade credit. High school A-G courses completed with a letter grade must be passed with a C- or better grade.

Pass (P) or Credit (CR) grades will meet A-G subject requirements but will not be calculated in the GPA. UC will continue to calculate the GPA for admission purposes using all A-G courses passed with letter grades in grades 10 and 11, including summer terms following grades 9, 10 and 11. Extra points in honors-level coursework will continue to be capped at 8 semesters of honors points in A-G courses completed with letter grades of A, B and C in grades 10 and 11.

The TOEFL website indicates the home exam is available in every country where TOEFL iBT is typically available, except Mainland China and Iran. Despite those assurances, UC will monitor testing conditions and availability in all countries to identify any potential issues for our prospective students. Additionally, if no acceptable TOEFL testing opportunities are identified for students in Mainland China and Iran, UC will provide additional guidance for prospective applicants from those countries. In the meantime, UC also accepts scores on IELTS to demonstrate English proficiency.

Homeschool students who are working with their local high school to complete an approved curriculum and earn an accredited high school diploma can meet A-G requirements with Pass or Credit grades in coursework completed in spring or summer 2020.

The typical route to admission for students not homeschooling through the local high school is through Admission by Exam or Admission by Exception. These will continue to be the paths to admission for this population of homeschool students. Campuses, however, will take into consideration the various test cancellations which may have impacted a student’s ability to qualify for Admission by Exam.

UC uses the college catalogs to determine whether a Pass or Credit grade is equivalent to a C (2.0) grade or better. If the catalog indicates that the Pass or Credit grade is equivalent to a C- (below 2.0), the grade will not meet minimum requirements.
