Requirements

The ability to read carefully, analyze what you’ve read, and write effective essays is an essential part of thriving at UC. All students entering UC as freshmen must fulfill the Entry Level Writing Requirement, either by demonstrating proficiency through qualifying test scores, UC-transferable college English composition courses or, for some campuses, by passing the Analytical Writing Placement Examination given each May.

If you intend to enroll at UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Merced, UC Riverside or UC San Diego, you may fulfill your Entry Level Writing Requirement with the Analytical Writing Placement Exam.

If you intend to enroll at UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara or UC Santa Cruz, you will need to review your campus’s instructions for meeting the Entry Level Writing Requirement.

Qualifying test scores & grades

You can satisfy the writing requirement by receiving a qualifying score or grade on the ACT, SAT, AP exam(s), International Baccalaureate exam(s), or a grade of C or higher on a UC-transferable English Composition class taken at a college or university.

Taking the Analytical Writing Placement Exam

You can satisfy the writing requirement by taking and passing the Analytical Writing Placement Exam.
