Exam Day

If you’re admitted to UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Merced, UC Riverside or UC San Diego, and you haven’t satisfied the Entry Level Writing Requirement, you will receive an email in May with information about taking the Analytical Writing Placement Exam (AWPE). This exam notification email will indicate the date and time of the online test, information about paying the test fee and instructions for getting any needed test accommodations.

If you plan to attend UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara or UC Santa Cruz, you should not take the AWPE, and will need to review campus-specific instructions. These campuses offer different options for satisfying the ELWR requirement.

Several days before your scheduled exam, you will receive detailed exam instructions by email. This email will be sent to the email address you listed on your UC admission application, not your UC campus email address. Be sure to check your spam folder as well as your inbox. The instructions will include the exam date and time, the exam URL, login instructions and exam day step-by-step instructions. This email will also note the number to call for technical support leading up to and on exam day. If you’re unable to take the exam on May 21st, you will have other options for testing and placement through your UC campus.

Accommodations

If you have a disability, health issue or if the Saturday test date conflicts with your religious observance, contact us so we can help arrange for accommodations.

Exam Fee

If your UC admission application fee was waived, the AWPE exam fee will be waived as well. Otherwise, the exam fee payment of $110 should be made online prior to the test date. An additional $10 late fee is added if you pay after the exam date.
