About the Exam

Each year more than 12,000 students take the Analytical Writing Placement Examination. A passing score on this exam is one way of satisfying the Entry Level Writing Requirement.

What’s on the exam?

The two hour exam asks you to read a prose passage and then write an essay in response to a topic and related questions based on the passage’s content.

How are essays scored?

Each student essay is read, evaluated and scored independently by two expert readers.
