Is a student who takes the ACT required to take the writing section?

Yes. Students applying to UC who take the ACT must take the writing test to meet the UC examination requirement even though the ACT organization calls the writing section "optional."

Is a student who takes the new SAT required to the writing portion?

Yes. The essay portion of the new SAT exam is required by UC.

Does UC average the SAT /ACT with Writing scores if an applicant has taken the test more than once?

No. For students who take the SAT or SAT with Essay, we use the highest combined score in critical reading, math and writing from the same test administration date. For students who take the ACT with Writing, we use the highest composite score from the same test administration date. If the student takes both exams, we will use the highest score from an examination date, regardless of the number of times a student took either exam.

Does UC average the old SAT and the new SAT?

No. UC will not “super score” or combine test results. UC will continue to use the highest total score from a single test date, as before.

Is it necessary for a student who wants to major in biology or chemistry to take the SAT Subject Test in Math Level 2?

UC does not require any SAT Subject Tests to meet freshman admission requirements. However, Subject Tests may be recommended for some majors at some campuses. View the list of recommendations.
