Admissions index instructions

We use a formula, called an admissions index, to determine if you're in the top 9% of California high school graduates. We convert your SAT/ACT scores to a UC score, which we match to your UC GPA. If your UC score is equal to or greater than the score required for your GPA, then you're in the top 9%.

The following instructions will give you step-by-step details on how to determine if you fall in the top 9%. But remember, this is just an estimate and not a guarantee that you will be in the top 9% of California high school graduates when you apply to UC.

1. Determine your UC GPA

See our directions on how to convert your school GPA to a UC GPA.

2. Convert your test scores to a UC Score total

Find your test:
ACT with Writing

SAT with Essay (starting March 2016)
SAT Reasoning Test (prior to March 2016)

If you take the ACT with Writing exam:

Use your highest ACT composite and Combined English/Writing or English Language Arts (ELA) scores from a single sitting. (That means if you take the test more than once, you can't use the composite score from one exam and the Combined English/Writing score from another.)

Find your composite score on the conversion table below and note the corresponding UC Score. Find your Combined English/Writing or English Language Arts (ELA) score on the table and note the corresponding UC Score.

Add the two UC Scores together to get your UC Score total.

  • If you took the SAT with Essay exam (starting March 2016):

Use your best scores from a single sitting. (For instance, you can't use reading and math scores from one test and a writing & language score from another.)

In the tables below, match your reading test score to the old SAT critical reading score. Then match your math score to the old SAT math score.

Add together the old SAT critical reading score and the old SAT math score, then find the equivalent UC Score (we’ll call this UC Score #1).

If you took both the SAT and the ACT, convert your test scores to equivalent UC Scores using the methods described above. Use your highest UC Score total in the next step.

4. Find your GPA in the index below and compare it with the UC Score

If your UC Score total meets or exceeds the minimum score shown for your GPA range, you will be guaranteed admission to a UC campus.
