1. Why is UC extending the deadline? I thought UC said they would not extend the deadline this year?

UC is doing all that it can to reach its goal of enrolling one new transfer student for every two new freshmen. Having a large and well qualified applicant pool is key to achieving this goal.

Expanding the application window for transfer students through January 3 will give UC-ready students — including those who might not have initially seen themselves as eligible or the right fit for UC — more time to consider and apply.

Although the deadline is extended, some major programs may fill up at some campuses during the priority application period. On December 1, students/counselors can check the list of closed major programs by campus.

2. Can freshman applicants submit an application during the extension period?

No, the extension period is only for transfer applicants with priority given to California Community College students.

3. Why is UC announcing the application extension now?

We strongly encourage all applicants to submit by the priority deadline of November 30. For those who cannot, we want to be sure that they know now what the final deadline is so that they can seek assistance and information from counselors before the winter break, when counselors may not be available.

4. Isn’t the extension unfair to students who will submit their UC application by the November 30 deadline? Won’t students who apply after November 30th have less access to help completing their application because of school closure in mid-December? Who is likely to benefit from this deadline extension?

All students can choose when they wish to submit their applications. But UC data show that students who applied during November last year were admitted at higher rates than applicants submitting during the extension.

Students who submit their application by November 30 have the same opportunity to apply to additional campuses/programs after the November deadline. The application extension is intended to provide more opportunity for California Community College transfer applicants to apply.

The application opened August 1 which provides four months for applicants to prepare their UC application. In addition, this extension is being announced prior to the regular November 30 deadline. All applicants will have ample time to prepare and submit an application to UC.

Announcing the deadline extension in advance helps counselors plan now how they may best assist students before their colleges close in December. The UC Application Call Center will also be open in December to support students if they have any questions about submitting their application.

5. How does the transfer application deadline affect students who submitted a TAG (Transfer Admission Guarantee)?

The transfer application deadline extension does not affect the TAG process.  Students who submitted a TAG must still submit the UC admission application for admission by the priority or extension deadline.

6. Will students be able to receive help from the UC Application Center during the extension?

Yes. UC Application Center staff will be available Monday – Friday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. except for holiday closures. Hours will be extended on January 2 and 3.

7. Is there an advantage to applying by November 30?

Although the transfer application review process will not begin any sooner than normal, our data show that students that applied in November were admitted at a higher rate last year than applicants who submitted during the extension. In addition, some majors will likely fill up with those who have applied during the priority application period. As a result, it is in an applicant’s best interest to apply by the original deadline if possible.

8. Is there an advantage to applying earlier in the month of November rather than later?

No. All transfer applications will be reviewed at the same time.

9. Once a student submits in November, can they still apply to another campus?

Yes, students can log in to their UC application account and add additional campuses with open major programs (additional fees may apply). Students can’t exchange one campus for another campus (e.g., withdraw a submitted application to one campus and exchange it for another).

Students who qualify for a fee waiver are able to use that fee waiver for up to four campuses.

If the fee waiver was already used for four campuses, students cannot exchange one campus for another campus. Fee waiver recipients may choose to pay for additional campuses after the initial four campuses.

10. If students already started an application, but do not submit it in November, can they just finish completing that application or should they start a new one?

Students should complete the application that was started.

11. Can changes be made to the application after submission?

Only contact information can be changed after application submission. Additionally, all transfer applicants will need to log in to the UC admission application site on or after January 4 to complete the Transfer Academic Update (TAU) to report fall 2016 grades and to report any changes to winter/spring 2017 courses. The priority deadline for the TAU submission is January 31.
